Oscar de la Renta chose not to show at New York Fashion Week and instead streamed on Amazon. Is Amazon a suitable forum for a luxury brand? CEO Alex Bolen said, "I'm not sure. But we have to experiment with new ways to get our story out." https://lnkd.in/g4rZMxyb We launched our funds when Covid started and with the halt in travel and tough fund raising environment for emerging managers, we focused on performance and experimented with new ways to reach out to allocators, namely Linkedin posts and YouTube videos which can now be binge-watched on www.quantflix.com . True, some people say that with the positive fund returns last year for both our long-only equity and multi-strategy funds, and the China fund outperforming its benchmark by its annualized double-digit aim, it was expected that we would pass the $100m mark. But when times are bad, most new investment monies went to well-known funds that are much bigger with a marketing budget that we cannot afford. So every lit...
When it reads like red tea, looks like red tea, it might still not be red tea.
Someone gave me this expensive-looking box of 紫娟红茶 - I can't remember who, people give us lots of caffeine and if you've been following my posts you know we also welcome coffee beans. 红茶 (hong cha) literally translates to 'red tea' and means black tea or English tea, the sort you can add milk and sugar to. This definition is not only used in the Chinese language but also in Japanese, so at least it covers two big tea-drinking nations.I knew that it's not red tea the moment I drank it. Despite having the words 'red tea' in the name - ok I was also misled by the red tin cans - this is actually a type of processed green tea from Yunnan. The name comes precisely from the color of the brewed tea looking like red tea. You can't add milk and sugar to this.
There can be overconfidence when you know the language - and some people say you can invest in anything globally now that there is Google Translate - but there are still nuances which require domain expertise. China-centric funds cannot pivot to ASEAN overnight, and long-short allocators need time to learn about systematic strategies, rates, volatility. Certainly I would not say I understand such strategies better than our multi-strat multi-manager portfolio manager who has traded in these instruments for 15 years.
I learnt a new thing after making a mistake. In investing, mistakes could be costlier than a cup of tea.
