Oscar de la Renta chose not to show at New York Fashion Week and instead streamed on Amazon. Is Amazon a suitable forum for a luxury brand? CEO Alex Bolen said, "I'm not sure. But we have to experiment with new ways to get our story out." https://lnkd.in/g4rZMxyb We launched our funds when Covid started and with the halt in travel and tough fund raising environment for emerging managers, we focused on performance and experimented with new ways to reach out to allocators, namely Linkedin posts and YouTube videos which can now be binge-watched on www.quantflix.com . True, some people say that with the positive fund returns last year for both our long-only equity and multi-strategy funds, and the China fund outperforming its benchmark by its annualized double-digit aim, it was expected that we would pass the $100m mark. Answer: What is Singapore?I get asked "where are you from?" in Singapore more than anywhere else I have lived at. Usually I receive this question from other Singaporeans but yesterday a Malaysian asked me this. My portfolio manager Kenneth Yap who was sitting with us found this phenomenon intriguing because to him I look "120% Singaporean" - yes I am a "value" citizen delivering more Singaporean goodness than possible.
What does it mean to NOT look Singaporean? Here are the answers I have collected in the past month:
1. You speak good Chinese - it's just understandable-Chinese. We are a billingual nation.
2. You speak good English - this is the English I use when I'm not in Singlish mode.
3. You have a Korean perm - no that's my natural curly hair.
4. You nod your head in agreement like the Japanese - isn't that what most people do?
5. You show enthusiasm - is Show Your Enthusiasm is not an Asian trait?
6. You dress like an American - my free T-shirts from conferences? My sneakers? It was dress-down Friday.
7. You must be an expat if you take Grab/Gojek in the CBD - I guess Singaporean professionals are expected to drive/own a car. I also take the MRT and bus.
8. You are wearing a hat - this is my favorite. Only tourists can wear hats. In all-year-round sunny Singapore.
Prospective investors ask, how can active investing work since markets are efficient and everyone knows what are the good stocks/companies? People see the things they want to see. There can be widely differing views on the same thing, or in my case the same person. I'm sure the VC investors in FTX had plenty of reasons to believe the company was worth gazillions.
For the record, I am Singaporean. Born, lived and studied here till I left for college.
